The audience that Colin Kaepernick is trying to reach out to in his movement is all Americans, specifically the caucasian Americans who don’t understand what the Black Lives Matter movement is all about. He’s also speaking to military veterans and government officials who take his movement as disrespect to our country. Kaepernick states, “Going back to the military thing, it’s a freedom that men and women who have fought for this country have given me this opportunity by the contributions they have made.” He’s saying how freedom of speech allows him to make others aware of this problem. He’s sincere with his argument “I want to understand further, let’s talk”, he’s encouraging other people to converse with him and try to understand what his argument is.

I like your insights on the Kaepernick's audience! While I agree with you that this relates to the freedom of speech, I also believe that this is about the freedom of expression because Kaepernick’s initial action, the kneeling, that drew the attention of the nation was a form of expression. In addition, it is true that the intended audience is the entire American population because Superbowl is one of the most watched sports events.
ReplyDeleteThis was a really great analysis of Kaepernick's intended audience. I would have to say that his primary targeted audience were other African Americans as well as government officials, as those are the people that are most likely to bring about the change. Other African Americans would better empathize with Kaepernick,. Since they are more likely to be more passionate about the cause than others, they would also be more likely to speak out and take action. As for government officials, they are the ones with power to change the countries policies and enforcement.
