The major argument made by Colin Kaepernick in this press interview is his concern over the issue of police brutality among the African-American community and his desire to bring awareness among those who are ignorant to the issue. History has shown that there has always been tension between African-Americans and law enforcement. Movements such as the Black Panther Party and the Civil Rights Movements were known for protesting against injustices such as police brutality. Even efforts such as Black Lives Matter, are seen today doing such protests. It's funny how history has a tendency to repeat itself.
Throughout the interview, Kaepernick clearly expresses his concern and frustration over the issue. He stated many times that he had seen the police brutality occur multiple times among the African-American community and that he feels that the United States and its flag don't represent their citizens as a collective. Kaepernick stated multiple times throughout the video that he is using his platform to take a stand for those who are oppressed (1:05-1:30). Kaepernick even states a negative personal experience he had with law enforcement (8:38-9:00). He is so passionate and adamant about the issue to the point where he doesn't mind if his career, endorsements, etc are lost over the issue because he "knows what he did was right" (9:30-10:30). This shows that Kaepernick is ready and willing to sacrifice certain aspects of his life to protest police brutality and other injustices that occur among African-Americans and other minorities. He wants to invoke change among this issue so he and others don't have to witness such injustices and see to it that everyone's civil rights are respected.

I think this is a really well-written piece on the argument of this interview. You did a great job summarizing the main points while also providing specific details. After reading this, I am interested in further exploring your blog, especially with regard to kairos, because there is a lot of controversy currently regarding Kaepernick's foundation and how it is providing funds to extreme left, violent groups like Assata's Daughters. ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job identifying Kaepernick's argument. While some people viewed his actions as malicious, and even threatened his job, his sacrifice was a very admirable one and many people are proud of what he stands for.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that Kaepernick is willing to sacrifice his career for the issue of police brutality adds to his ethos since he is clearly genuinely involved in changing society. His dedication the cause confirms his major argument and it also creates exigence by depicting the severity of the problem.
ReplyDeleteVery well composed analysis of the major arguments! I especially was intrigued by the external link you posted about the police brutality. It really opened my eyes to what exactly Kaepernick is advocating and protesting against. I think his major arguments were definitely effective and played an important role in beginning more conversations among the nation. In terms of audience and the rhetorical moment, these discussions regarding negative experiences African Americans had to face because of racial prejudice are also more than appropriate, for police brutality cases against this population is still prevalent today.
ReplyDeleteNice post! I agree that his actions brought awareness to those who are ignorant as well as to the law enforcement. With this whole situation, it amazes me how Kaepernick did not have to use words to make his argument, but by simply kneeling down during the national anthem. It really sheds light on the saying , "actions speak louder than words." And this is really evident because even though it happened 2016, we are still addressing it today.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you cited and pulled quotes from Kaepernick's interview to support your claim. I agree with what you claim to be the major argument and Kaepernick made it pretty explicit in his interview. Kaepernick's major claim has sparked national interest and many that were ignorant to the topic began to be made aware by Kaepernick's actions.
